Chapter Twenty-Two

Late afternoon descended upon Lausanne as Cassandra made her way to the city’s cemetery. With the sun setting in the next few hours, she wondered what everyone was still doing, wandering around the streets, gawking at the bodies strewn about? They should be seeking shelter, looking for places to hide. The day was coming to an end. Weren’t they afraid?

Getting back to Leo later today was looking grim. Finding somewhere safe for the night was what she’d be doing as soon as she finished a visit to her parents’ grave.

As she neared the cemetery’s road, some kind of crowd waited around the front gates. It looked like they were waiting for a celebrity to make an appearance, or perhaps it was some metal band that wanted to perform amongst the graves.

Cassandra got closer, then edged past them to get to the entrance. People were kind and allowed her through. Once she reached the inside of the cemetery, she saw why the group of people had gathered.

A man stood on a platform by a large tree, gesticulating to the crowd fifty meters away. People stared up at him without saying a word.

Something about it reminded her of a sermon on the mount.

Could it actually be a younger Vincent and Elise, just like she’d seen a younger version of her parents at the hospital?

In her stumbling around, wondering where she’d locate Vincent, did she walk directly to him?

“… and I know you’re all confused,” the young Vincent went on. “I know you expected things to be different, but you have to concentrate. Close your eyes and think. What’s the last thing you remember from your life? If you can’t remember it, you won’t be able to understand, and you’ll end up wandering aimlessly. Difficult times are about to come, and I need you to be aware, especially if that darkness descends again.”

When Vincent roved the crowd with his eyes, he stopped on Cassandra.

After a slight nod her way, he jumped off the platform and strode to stand in front of her.

Eyes locked on him approaching, she didn’t move.

Startled by her memories of him, the last image of a pierced neck, she shivered when he stopped inches from her.

“Don’t be afraid,” he whispered. “Come with me a moment.” He took her by the hand and led her farther into the cemetery, searching for a more private location to talk.

Elise followed close behind.

“I’m sure you’re full of questions.” He spoke in a calm, steady voice, which she appreciated.

Cassandra just stared at him in fear. First her parents,
